Job Description

The opportunity

This position is responsible to ensure that all actuarial aspects of financial reporting, and in particular valuation, are consistent with Manulife standards, professional standards and regulatory requirements. The incumbent is expected to play a key leadership role to work closely with Vietnam key stakeholders in driving company strategy and translate financial trends for meaningful discussion and to measurable actions, and also to provide problem solving support on complex business issues. The role has to ensure that adequate management reports and analysis are in place to highlight financial results and identify issues/opportunities for enhancement. The incumbent will also assist in various ad hoc projects including M&A activities, bancassurance deals and new channel strategy. The role will fully engage with Regional Actuarial Services in improving IFRS17 processes to gain efficiencies and an accelerated quarter-end deliverables.

Leadership

Financial Management

Provide leadership on various valuations and actuarial investigations required, ensure that appropriate assumptions, consistent methodology, standards and practices are followed. Deliver quality financial report and in particular plays a hand on role with respect to the Source of Earnings analysis, DCAT, Embedded Value, and market risk sensitivity. Provide and communicate local and IFRS 17 sources of earnings analysis and estimates and identify trends and business issues to highlight to Senior Management. Provide and communicate meaningful MIS, analysis and decision support to BU Management Engage with Regional Office to propose improvements to the IFRS 17 processes. Management of the quarter PAR processes and annual basis change process ensuring that adequate experience investigation and review are in place. Execute planning and earnings forecasts process with other key stakeholders in Vietnam Participate in Vietnam ALCO, monitor and manage risk issues relate to valuation processes and earnings impact. Provide timely and accurate reports to external auditor on regulatory reports, and main contact point for the external auditor Perform the statutory duties of Appointed Actuary such as approval of premium rates, Actuary Report, Risk Management Policy and Investment Policy Meet regulatory (MOF) reporting requirements providing accurate results in a timely manner Perform experiences studies and communicate and implement impact of basis change Review reinsurance treaties and ensure execution of treaties Manage the Local capital ratio closely. Communicate monthly movements. Forecast future trends and timing of capital remittances.

Risk Management

Acting as first line of defense, work closely with Chief Risk Officer in identifying, managing and migrating financial risks, capital risk, etc. Provide impact analysis on a timely manner on regulatory solvency and ERM consultations Deliver quality and timely support for valuation control and ensure controls in place and well managed

Pricing

Work closely with Chief Product Officer to oversee and mange product risk Assist Chief Product Officer to ensure the timely and accurately products submissions to MOF

Growth and Business review

Provide financial analysis and advice to business to support growth of distribution channels and other business initiatives. Support the development of consumer/environment/regulatory changes. Regularly provide briefs on impending regulatory changes Play an active role in industry actuarial committees Participate and execute in inorganic strategy such as M&A deals, bancaasurance deals, new channel strategy.

What we are looking for

  • Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Fellow of Society of Actuaries or Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

  • 12+ years of experience with strong business sense

  • Strong knowledge of Local reserve processes and IFRS17 is a plus

  • Solid experience in valuation and risk management

  • Strong analytical and decision making skills

  • Sound business judgement and strategic thinking ability

  • Strong leadership and management skills

  • Demonstrated project management skills

  • Excellent communication & relationship skills

  • Strong influential skills

  • Fluent in Vietnamese is a plus

  • Good verbal and written English skill
