Department Summary

The College of Education (COE) is home to 3 academic departments, 14 academic degree programs, 14 research and outreach units, and the HEDCO Clinic. All academic departments house both graduate and undergraduate programs addressing the full range of issues present in educational and social systems. Our tenure and career non-tenure track faculty in each department are devoted to inspiring and mentoring the approximately 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students in the COE who will be the next generation of educational and social science leaders. The COE has a long record of developing widely adopted, evidence-based assessments and interventions used in both clinical settings and in school programs that serve millions of children in thousands of schools across the country and world. The Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences is one of three academic departments in the College of Education. It is comprised of four major programs: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS), School Psychology (SPSY), and Special Education (SPED). The CDS Program offers an undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degree and a program of courses in American Sign Language. The master’s program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The Special Education and Clinical Sciences Department is involved in collaborative efforts among all COE departments and institutes to support research across the College, outreach activities, and core requirements for the masters and doctoral programs.

Position Summary

The College of Education is seeking to hire a student-focused clinical educator to provide clinical instruction, coordination, and supervision in clinical or professionally related community education/service settings to students and supervisors of students in the Communications Disorders and Sciences Program. The Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to demonstrate and share the expertise of their practice and to provide a strong leadership role within these settings or for the program, contributing to the advancement of student training and the development of the field. Faculty will have a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, working with underrepresented populations, and creating an inclusive environment for our increasingly diverse student body.

The mission of the University of Oregon's Communication Disorders and Sciences program is to prepare students to understand, assess, and treat individuals across diverse ethnic, cultural, linguistic, social and economic backgrounds experiencing challenges in speech, language, literacy, communication, cognition, and swallowing. The program is dedicated to achieving excellence in student preparation via the integration of clinical and classroom education, the generation and application of research, and the provision of community outreach. Our vision is to train leaders in the field in an environment that encourages inclusion, critical thinking, freedom of inquiry, and social justice. Through teaching, advising, mentoring, and intellectual contributions to academic program design, this position has the potential to guide and shape the next generation of speech-language pathology leaders in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and Nation.

Typical duties of the Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor are providing clinical instruction, clinical coordination, and mentorship for master’s students in the CDS program. Supervision may occur on-campus in the HEDCO Clinic or at off-campus community practicum sites. They focus their training and instruction on the practical application of skills necessary to engage in a given profession. Other duties may include departmental, college, and university service, as well as collaborative curriculum review/revision and academic program leadership. All faculty are expected to contribute to the equity and inclusion goals of the program and college and to incorporate the best inclusive practices indicated in their field of expertise.

Topic areas for supervision may include speech fluency, communication delays and disorders and interventions for speech sound production, using oral and written language, preliteracy skills, reading comprehension and social interaction and other related areas. Ideally, applicants will have clinical and/or supervision experience in two or more of the following areas: school age speech and language; speech and language in young children; fluency; craniofacial disorders.

This position is a nine-month Career Faculty position in the Clinical Professor classification series. Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor, Practicum Supervisors typically have summer appointments. The position’s responsibilities are guided by the COE’s Non-Tenure Track Professional Responsibilities Policy, United Academics’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the COE’s NTTF Policy for Promotion and Review.

Minimum Requirements

• Master’s degree or doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, or related field

• Evidence of professional expertise in areas required for the program including audiology, augmentative and alternative communication, brain injury and cognitive rehabilitation, acquired adult language and motor speech disorders, speech fluency, communication delays and disorders and interventions for speech sound production, using oral and written language, preliteracy skills, reading comprehension and social interaction and other related areas

• Demonstrated expertise, effective mentoring, teaching, and/or supervision in clinical/ K-12 educational settings (e.g., having a leadership position in K-12, mentoring graduate students or recent graduates, teaching seminars/ workshops, running support groups)

• Demonstrated evidence of academic or clinical program leadership and/or coordination (e.g., led a school/hospital committee, coordinated development of new policy and process for IEP development)

• Current Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology or Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

• Hold or obtain Oregon licensure in Speech-Language Pathology (for speech-language pathologists only)

• Current CPR certification

• 2 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision (post Certification)

• 9 months post Certification

To qualify for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, successful candidates must meet all the requirements of Clinical Assistant Professor plus 6 years of post-terminal degree experience including the following:

• Evidence of high-quality clinical instruction/supervision as related to the position (e.g., practicum instruction and supervision, training practicum instructors/supervisors, developing and supervising a specialty clinic)

• Participation in clinical education (e.g., practicum, clinical methods training)

• Documented service and/or leadership in program coordination, and/or previous leadership in the field, community, college, and/or university

• Professional and/or scholarly contributions to the field with an emphasis on clinical education (e.g., developed and published teaching or clinical tools, published scholarly articles, presentations at state conferences, mentored student clinical/research projects)

To qualify for the rank of Clinical Professor, successful candidates must meet all the requirements of Clinical Associate Professor plus an additional 6 years of post-terminal degree experience (12 years total) including the following:

• Active leadership responsibilities in a variety of areas (e.g., development and evaluation of a clinical education program, budgeting, and staff evaluation in a school/clinic)

• Widening of the scope of impact and audience of scholarly activities related to or directly impacting clinical education (e.g., having a state or national office; serving on a state board or committee; develop and publish clinical materials, in the practice literature, applying for internal or external awards to support program work)

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated potential to contribute positively to our diverse community and to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills that will enhance community relations and support graduate student training

• Ability to learn Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite

• Competency communicating with other clinicians

• Competency working with clients who are diverse in background

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in clinical education or CF supervision

• Three years' clinical experience post-Master's degree

• Multilingual, with a preference for Spanish
